Fewer patients through the door than usual, which is the sort of thing you notice almost immediately by the shape of the morning — more space between appointments, fewer people perched in the waiting area doing that particular blend of patience and mild impatience. Whatever the reason for the lighter numbers, nobody was in a hurry to question it. A quieter morning has a way of being accepted gracefully, no questions asked, the professional equivalent of finding a seat on a full train.
It made for a noticeably more relaxed pace, the kind where things get done without ever feeling rushed to do them — a rare enough combination that it's worth remarking on when it turns up. Nothing dramatic, just an ease to the morning that carried through rather than evaporating the moment the first minor complication showed up, because today there wasn't really one.
Lunch broke things up nicely — sushi, with the pharma folks, which is one of those work lunches that manages to be both business and genuinely pleasant, a combination not every calendar invite delivers on. Good company, better than average lunch, the sort of conversation that drifts between shop talk and everything else without either side dominating. It's easy to forget how much a decent lunch can reset the second half of a day until one actually does it.
Back to clinic for the afternoon, which kept up the morning's lighter rhythm rather than undoing it — still steady, still busier than not, but without the crush that turns an afternoon into a countdown. Things moved the way they're meant to when nobody's fighting the clock, and the day wrapped up with enough daylight still going spare to count as an early finish.
Home earlier than the week's been offering lately, which after a run of longer days registers as something close to a small windfall — not enough to plan anything around, but enough to notice and be quietly grateful for. The evening asked for nothing more than it was given: no errands trailing in from the day, no looming list waiting to be tackled, just the straightforward business of unwinding, properly, the way an evening is supposed to work when the day behind it hasn't demanded too much.
It's the kind of day that resists a tidy takeaway, mostly because nothing needed fixing, avoiding, or recovering from — just a lighter clinic, a good lunch, an ordinary afternoon, and an evening spent doing very little with no apology attached. Some days earn their rest through sheer volume survived; today earned it more simply, by not asking for much in the first place. Either way, the sofa didn't seem to mind how it got there.
