Ulama group: Abolish English for two subjects
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ulama Association has handed a memorandum to the Keeper of the Ruler’s Seal Tan Sri Engku Ibrahim Engku Ngah seeking for the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English to be abolished.
Its secretary Mohd Azmi Abd Hamid said teaching the subjects in English threatened the position of the national language.
“The argument that it is necessary to continue the policy to check the decline in the standard of English among students is not acceptable.”
He said to make English a must-pass subject for the SPM certificate would only discriminate students in rural areas, who were generally weak in the language.
“It will not be a problem for students who are good in English but what will happen to those who are weak in the language?” he asked.
It is difficult to make of what it is when Ulama also meddle with the issue. It is now becoming harder to draw the line of whether this is a racial issue, or a religious one. The fact that the Ministry was meddling for quite some time before making it's final decision also did not help matters
