In Praise of Nothing Much

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoSome days have something to say for themselves. Today didn’t. It was a dull day, and I don’t mean that as a complaint. After a week of long drives, late dinners and a city half underwater, dull felt almost like a gift I hadn’t known to ask for.

It started slowly. There was no alarm-clock panic and no early call to set the tone, just a gradual drift into the day, as if the morning itself wasn’t quite awake yet either. There’s a particular quality to a slow start when you’re not anxious about it. The coffee gets drunk while it’s still hot. The thoughts arrive one at a time, in a sensible order, instead of all at once and shouting.

And somewhere in that unhurried morning, things quietly got done. By lunchtime everything was sorted. Not frantically, and not in a last-minute rush, just steadily put in order, one thing after another, until there was nothing left on the list demanding attention. It’s an underrated feeling, reaching midday and realising the day has already been dealt with. There’s no triumph in it, only a kind of mild, satisfied surprise.

The afternoon went to paperwork, which is the natural home of a dull day. Paperwork never pretends to be exciting, and there’s an honesty in that I’ve come to respect. It asks for patience and attention and very little else. Forms get filled, signatures go where signatures go, and the pile that looked so permanent at two o’clock is noticeably smaller by four. Nobody will ever make a film about it. But it’s the sort of work that keeps everything else standing, done quietly in the background while the more interesting days take the credit.

The evening was for relaxing, and I mean properly relaxing, not the kind where you’re secretly planning tomorrow. Nothing scheduled, nothing owed, nowhere to be. Just the ordinary comfort of being home, with the day behind me and nothing in it I need to go back to.

It’s tempting to skip days like this in the telling, as if they don’t count because nothing happened in them. But most of life is made of exactly these days: the slow starts, the tidy mornings, the afternoons of quiet admin, the evenings that ask for nothing. The busy days get remembered. The dull ones are what hold everything together.

So I’m grateful for this one, uneventful as it was. It was a day that didn’t need saving or rescuing. It simply needed to be lived through, and it was.

There’s more to come this week, no doubt. For tonight, nothing much is exactly enough.
