A Lighter Kind of Landing

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoThere's a particular relief in a day that doesn't ask too much of you straight away — not idle, just unhurried, the sort of morning that lets you ease back into the week rather than being shoved into it. After the last few days' momentum, this one arrived softer round the edges, and it was hard not to be grateful for that.

The morning stayed light, mercifully — a manageable trickle rather than a flood, enough space between things to actually finish a thought before the next one arrived. It's a rare enough gift that you learn to notice it when it happens, rather than assuming it as the default.

Lunch, once again, came with pharma in tow — a second instalment in what's becoming something of a weekly fixture. Familiar faces this time, which helped; less performance, more genuine conversation, the kind where the sales pitch and the actual chat blur together comfortably enough that you stop minding which is which. Food good, company fine, the whole thing wrapped up without anyone overstaying their welcome.

The afternoon clinic picked up where the morning had declined to, busy in the ordinary way, patients arriving with their various concerns and leaving, hopefully, with somewhat fewer of them. Nothing remarkable, just steady work, the kind that fills an afternoon without leaving much of a story behind.

The ward round, though, had other plans. What was meant to be a tidy conclusion to the day stretched out considerably longer than billed, one thing prompting another the way these rounds sometimes do, each patient's chart apparently containing a small subplot nobody had mentioned at handover. By the time it wrapped up, the day had well and truly overstayed its own welcome.

And then, as if the day wanted to make its point emphatically, the heavens opened on the drive home — proper tropical rain, the sort that turns the windscreen wipers into a losing battle and reduces the road ahead to a vague suggestion. Traffic slowed to a crawl, brake lights smearing red across the wet glass, the whole commute turning into something closer to an endurance exercise than a drive. Made it home eventually, a little frazzled, considerably damper round the ankles than planned.

Dinner restored some equilibrium, as dinner tends to, and afterwards there was just enough energy left for a trip out to Bangsar Village — partly for the walk, partly for an actual errand, the suit needing its alteration seen to before it could be trusted for whatever occasion was waiting for it. Standing there being pinned and measured has its own particular comedy, the tailor making small adjustments with the quiet authority of someone who's seen every kind of posture go wrong. A few minutes of that, a wander past the shopfronts afterwards, and the day finally felt like it had earned its close.

Not a day with a headline. Just one that, rain and ward rounds included, got where it needed to go.
