KLickr Photo Hunt for Urbanscapes

COMPETITION UPLOAD PERIOD FOR ALL FOUR HUNTS ARE EXTENDED TO 6PM SUNDAY! PLEASE UPLOAD YOUR MASTERPIECES VIA TWITTER USING #klickr TO ENTER THE COMPETITION.

KLickr. Flickr. Urbanscapes. Competition. You do the math. We have been brewing the four words at the beginning. We wanted a competition, with people at Urbanscapes taking pictures, And we what it to be about accessibility, not who was carrying the most expensive gear. It was about being at the right moment at the right time. So we came up with the KLickr Photo Hunts!

It will be a series of four hunts during the day. The hunters - that you, the Urbanscapes dwellers armed preferably with your mobile phones - would be given a theme, and a set period of time to take photos and upload them via twitter with a hashtag #klickr. You can use any of the photo sharing fascilities - twitpic, lockerz, owly, posterous, even instagram. Through a sophisticated network of programming and raw computer power - re my iPhone and my MacBook Air - the tagged photos would then be transferred onto our Facebook Competition Page where all those expressions of arts and beauty would be showcased.

Prior to Urbanscapes, KLickr had run a couple of other competitions and the winners of these competitions will come on board as guest judges for the Hunts. We would then deliberate on the winners - and as one of the KLickr judges would be a lawyer, don't even try to street demo us into picking your pics. The winners would get vouchers and A YEAR SUBSCRIPTION TO FLICKR PRO.

These are the themes and the period the photos should be uploaded via twitter - balloons from 1330 to 1500 hrs, colourful dresses from 1600 to 1700 hrs, music from 1800 to 1900 and the main one, lights from 2000 hrs on the Saturday and the photo can be uploaded for the competition up to 1800 hrs the next day, Sunday 17th July.

It's Closing In

After planning for quite some time, it appear that everything is coming together nicely for the KLickr team. We would be having a tent - to be dubbed KLickr-ville - at Urbanscapes 2011 to be held at Padang Astaka PJ on Saturday. Praying for nice weather, from what we had seen so far, the tent is going to be huge - 40 by 40 feet. The other evening, we met up to finalise the plan as well as assigning the task for the day. We also talked about the budgeting and sponsorship. On the whole, I am pretty optimistic about this weekend.

All together, there would be four main facets to KLickr-ville. Each with their own unique role and attraction. There would be a total of three separate competitions on the day, although the one I would be running will have four winneres in the end. The would also be photoshow as you would expect, but with a twist. We will call this the 5 minutes Photo Express - more about that later. There will also be slideshows for events taken place in the recent past and also promoting our future activities. We would also be showing our past projects. There would be a charity portrait shoot which the participants would have to pay a nominal fee as entrance, and for which the taken portrait would be upload onto facebook for their friends to generate the number of likes. This will then double as a competition as the winner with the most number of likes on their uploaded portraits will then receive a prize.

There would also be sales of prints by KLick members. There would be vouchers given away for visitors to KLickr-ville as well other giveaways. There will also be a portrait-taking competitions where participants over a period of time would need to click away portraits of Urbascapes dwellers, and the participants with the most number of captures would win. In the evening, after sunset, there will be slideshows of all the photos taken during the day as KLickr-ville sail away through the night.

To recap - the four facets would be - competitions (three of them on the day), exhibitions of past events, the 5-minute Photo Express, and the charity Portrait shoots. I will go through each of these in the next few entries. Watch this space!

Lunch after the Walk

It started to rain right after the teh tarik session with Kam Raslan, and the planned meeting at KLCC was a couple of hours yet. Some of the troupe members were yet to have lunch, so even though I have already had some noodles, I decided to go on for some nasi daun pisang.

We walked for about 10 minutes in the rain and by the time we settled in, it started raining heavily outside.

We had lunch at Restoran Kader. Been here a couple of times. It was not bad, but most o the food had already run out, this being Sunday and all. But what I enjoyed more was the company. A great lunch in the end, especially with the heavy rain outside.

The highlight - Magnus ordering iced lemon juice - singo beng, tok seh butir. You do the translation.

A Walk with Kam Raslan

It was only a short walk, but was a fascinating one. More of a history lesson, but it was not the political-laced, race-biased kind that was thought in schools nowadays. It was about our heritage. The legacy which made Kuala Lumpur what it is today. And it was all thanks to our guide for the morning, Kam Raslan.

Right, I wouldn't want to say much about the gentleman. The last time I made praises for a certain somebody, I ended up with a surat layang - at least I knew then that I had hit the big time when you receive an anonymous letter about somebody you mentioned in your blog. But I digressed. Just check his website here or google him to find more about him.

The walk started behind Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad opposite Dataran Merdeka, which was teaming with people this morning. No, they were not there to join the walk, but it was the crowd from the KL Marathon that morning. Kam started talking about Masjid Jamek, the Dataran and Bukit Aman, and we later moved on towards Lebuh Ampang.

We then doubled back towards Central Market, stopping at a Chinese temple along the way, to meet one of the main character who built Kuala Lumpur, Yap Ah Loi. Kam did not do this walk regularly, but it was very clear that he enjoyed doing it, and certainly he had the passion for it. His knowledge of KL certainly would put the locals to shame.

For those interested, he would be doing another session next Sunday. Please take a look here for more details. The best way to find out about KLickr's activities or to join us, please visit our Facebook page here.

3 weeks to go

Yes, and that was 20 days to go, if you count it that way. After the photowalk with Kam Raslan today, we congregated in KLCC to have some more discussion about the upcoming KLickrs in Urbanscapes, and today we mainly concentrating on the shape of our booth.

The original plan was to have a separate show area for slides as well as have the main exhibition area for photographic activities and other stuffs. We originally wanted to host the photo show in a bus. We would also be on the day, highly dependent on mobile Internet. We just hoped that the weather would be kind, as should it be raining, most of our major plans, or the Urbanscapes itself would be doomed.

The area given to us was actually quite big, measuring 12 by 12 meters. We had to get some help in optimizing the space, a designer of sort. Shafina had some friends of her on board to help out. There was also the matter of budget. Apart from the space and some basic facilities, the organizer was not able to provide much.

My task for the day was to engineer a way of integrating user experience in terms of photo uploads into Facebook. We would be having a mini competitions where uploaded photos would be judged on the number of likes from the public. I would still have to study the idea out as I was still unclear on a few things. Luckily, I have already had a few days off booked up around the time of the show.
