Sunrise, Sand, and a Change of Address

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoMornings by the sea have a way of making early starts feel almost reasonable, even when the sky hasn't quite decided what kind of day it wants to have. Sunrise came in muted, cloud doing most of the work instead of colour, but it was enough to justify being up and about while the resort was still mostly asleep. A walk through the grounds followed — quiet paths, damp air, the sort of footage better saved for its own entry than squeezed into today's account.

Breakfast redeemed any lingering greyness in the sky. A proper spread, the kind that makes indecision feel like a luxury rather than a flaw — and food good enough that seconds required no real persuasion. Afterwards, a buggy ride around the grounds, which is possibly the most efficient way ever devised to feel like a guest of honour while doing absolutely nothing yourself. Then down to the beach, sand underfoot, the sea doing its unhurried, indifferent thing regardless of who was watching.

Back in the room, a nap presented itself as the only sensible option, while Anita took on the rather less restful job of packing everything back into the size it had originally come out of. Checkout was noon sharp — one of those departures that always arrives faster than expected, the villa reverting instantly from "ours" to "just a very nice room" the moment the key card went back.

Lunch broke up the drive towards Johor Premium Outlets, where a couple of purchases were made with the sort of restraint that still somehow leaves the boot slightly fuller than before. From there, on to Johor Bahru proper, checking into the Sheraton — a shift in register from beach resort to conference hotel, all clean lines and purposeful lobbies, the sort of place built for people about to be busy.

Azida dropped by not long after, and tea turned into the kind of unhurried catch-up that doesn't need an agenda to justify itself. Dinner brought a different kind of conversation — talk drifting, as it tends to among old colleagues, towards an upcoming product launch, the sort of discussion that mixes genuine interest with the low hum of shop talk neither party quite manages to switch off.

Later, a walk through to see the conference venue mid-preparation — chairs half-arranged, signage half-up, that particular limbo of a space becoming something before it's ready to be seen. There's a strange calm in watching a room get built for tomorrow while still standing in today's clothes.

And with that, an early settle for the night, the sea now a day behind rather than a few steps away. Tomorrow's shaping up long, by all accounts — which, after a day this full, feels less like a warning and more like a fair exchange.
