Small Weather, Big Silence

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoMonday arrived exactly as advertised — with a faint sense of grievance and the particular greyness that only Mondays seem able to manufacture, regardless of what the actual sky is doing. Which, for the record, was doing rather well for itself. Sunshine in proper abundance, the kind that makes you resent being indoors at all, let alone indoors doing the specific admin of easing back into a working week.

The blues arrived on schedule, then deepened rather unexpectedly. Word came through that John C. Dvorak had died — the great cantankerous voice of the No Agenda podcast, forecaster of doom for every technology going, right up until his own hardware, as his co-host rather fittingly put it, finally gave out. Eighty years old, decades of column inches, and a manner that never once softened for anybody. There's a particular flavour of sadness reserved for voices you've had in your ears for years without ever quite meeting — familiar in that one-sided way podcasts allow, where someone becomes furniture in your commute or your kitchen without you noticing until the furniture's gone. He'll be missed, properly missed, by more people than the obituaries will ever manage to count.

The day itself didn't pause for any of that, obviously. Days rarely do. Back into the swing of things after whatever loosening a weekend allows, catching up on the accumulated business that apparently multiplies overnight regardless of how little was actually left undone on Friday. Correspondence, small fires, the general administrative residue of having been briefly elsewhere.

The afternoon tipped into properly busy — the sort of stretch where you look up and discover the light's changed character without your permission, gone from generous to slanting to that thin gold that means everyone should have gone home an hour ago. Clinic ran long, as these things periodically insist on doing, patients and paperwork both taking their own sweet time, and by the time the last of it was wrapped up the sunshine that had been so cheerfully wasted through the window had packed up entirely.

Late finish, then. The kind where the walk to the car feels vaguely accusatory, as though the day is personally disappointed you stayed so long inside it.

The evening did what evenings are for — recovery, mostly, and in this case a rather specific kind. The No Agenda tribute episode, Adam Curry alone with twenty years of shared argument and no one to argue back, was exactly as strange and moving as you'd expect. Equal parts wake and roast, which felt right for a man who'd have hated anything more solemn. Sat with a cup of something warm, listening to a community process a loss out loud, the Monday blues quietly rearranged themselves into something closer to appreciation. Not every day needs resolving into a lesson. Some just need sitting with.
