Wednesday, Efficient If Not Exactly Leisurely

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoThe morning started smoothly enough, right up until the traffic remembered itself and decided to be heavier than the forecast in my head had allowed for. Nothing catastrophic, just enough of a crawl to eat into the margin I'd optimistically built in, the kind of margin that exists mainly to be quietly consumed by circumstances beyond one's control.

Clinic started on time regardless, which felt like a small triumph given the drive in, and there's something satisfying about a day that begins as intended even when the run-up to it didn't cooperate. Still finding my footing with the new clinic times, if I'm honest — the shape of the day has shifted just enough that old instincts about when things should happen keep gently misfiring, like reaching for a light switch that's moved to the other wall.

Lunch was the briefest of affairs, more refuelling than eating, the sort of meal that exists purely to keep the engine turning rather than to be enjoyed for its own sake. No complaints about it particularly, just an acknowledgement that some days the pause you'd like to take gets compressed into something more functional.

The day finished late, later than I'd have chosen, but there was an efficiency to it that made the lateness feel earned rather than wasted. Everything moved, nothing stalled, and by the time the last of the list was cleared there was at least the satisfaction of having got through it without the day sprawling into inefficiency on top of length.

Home by sunset again, which two days into this new arrangement is starting to feel less like luck and more like something I might actually be able to rely on — cautiously, without tempting fate too openly. Straight for dinner on arrival, much as the day before, no interval between coming through the door and sitting down to eat. Some evenings don't call for ceremony, just food and a chair.

Tired by the end of it, properly so, the kind of tiredness that sits in the shoulders as much as anywhere else. Two days into the new schedule and the adjustment is clearly still under way — not unmanageable, just not yet automatic. I suspect by the end of the week it'll have stopped feeling like an adjustment at all and simply become Wednesday, the way these things tend to settle once you stop noticing the seams.

For now, though, it's enough that the day held together, that the lateness came with something to show for it, and that dinner and an early end to the evening are the only items left on the agenda. No further ambitions tonight beyond that.

Tuesday, A Schedule Finding Its Feet

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoSlept properly last night, the sort of sleep that doesn't need explaining or apologising for, and it made all the difference to how the morning unfolded. Anita had a check-up first thing, so she came along with me, which turned an otherwise routine start into something closer to companionable — the two of us setting off together before the day had properly decided what sort of day it was going to be.

This was the first outing for the revised clinic schedule, morning and afternoon both, today and tomorrow, a slightly heavier arrangement than usual and one that had been theorised about for a while before finally being put to the test. There's always a small nervousness attached to any new system on its debut, the sense that it might buckle somewhere unexpected. It didn't, as it happens. Held together rather well, all things considered — though not without the odd wrinkle, the afternoon round running late enough that one patient ended up waiting longer than either of us would have liked. Nothing dramatic, just the sort of drift that new schedules seem to accumulate before they learn their own edges.

I'd made a point this week of not seeing any pharmaceutical reps, a small deliberate omission rather than an oversight. There's something quietly restorative about a week with one fewer category of interruption, one fewer polished pitch to sit through. The days felt marginally more my own for it.

By the time the afternoon list finally cleared, it was later than usual, the sort of lateness that makes the drive home feel longer than the odometer would suggest. Still, I made it back before sunset, which felt like it ought to count for something after a day that had run past its intended shape. Straight for dinner on arrival, no detours, no pretence of unwinding first — the kind of hunger that doesn't negotiate.

There's a particular satisfaction in a day that's asked more of you than expected and still ends somewhere near where you'd hoped. The revised schedule will no doubt need a few more outings before it settles into something unremarkable, which is really the aim of any new system — to eventually stop announcing itself and simply become the way things are done.

Early night planned again, and this time I intend to actually honour the plan rather than let it drift the way plans sometimes do. Tomorrow brings round two of the same arrangement, and I'd like to meet it having actually rested, rather than merely having intended to.

For now, though, the day is done, the schedule has survived its first outing, and that will do nicely.
