Fraser's Hill - Day 1, Part 1 - Reaching the top

Welcome to Fraser's Hill. This is the roundabout in the center of town with the clock tower.I am sure many of the readers were aware that I spent the last weekend in Fraser's Hill. We stayed at the Smokehouse, an English Tudor house built back in the 1930s. We stayed for a couple of nights, driving up there on the Sunday Morning. We were joined by my in-laws and their driver, plus one of Anita's nephew. We set off early as we wanted the catch the 11am slot driving up from the Gap. The Gap is situated 9 km downhill from Fraser's Hill proper and as the name suggest, it was a small gap of road snaking up the hill, allowing a single file of traffic. The condition of the road was reasonable, but if you are prone to bee sea or in this case roadsick, beware. It will induce nausea. Irfan, my younger boy vomited driving up the Gap. Our two maids were given some medications to cope with the drive.

Waiting for the light to change at the bottom of the Gap

From our house in Gombak, we took the Federal Route 1 through Rawang, driving up a further 20 minutes turning past the town of Kuala Kubu Baharu. From then on, it took another 60 minutes before we reached the Gap when the road got considerably narrower and windier. We reached the Gap with plenty of time, enough for a 15 minutes stretching. There was a restaurant at the traffic waiting area but unfortunately it was closed for renovation at the time. There are comfortable restroom facilities there and a few stalls selling food and drinks.

The post officeThe traffic up through the Gap is controlled by a set of lights. The traffic going up starts at odd hours, 11am in my case for 40 minutes. At the even hours, the lights here turns red, and only downhill traffic were allowed, again for 40 minutes. They were allowed around 20 minutes transit time. I think the system starts everyday at 7am until late evening. With the incident we had, with Irfan puking and all, we made it safely up to the town in around 20 minutes. The first thing that greeted us was a small roundabout around a cute clock tower. The town center was charming with a small post office, a police station and a couple of inns - Shahzan and Puncak Inn. There was also a new sports complex being build overlooking the Golf Course.

The Newly renovated Puncak Inn seen from the Clock Tower

Since it was too early to check in still, we stopped for lunch at Puncak Inn. It was a newly refurbished hotel offering basic rooms. There is a coffee house where we had some food. While waiting for our orders, we explored the surrounding area, took some pictures. My boys ran around at a small park as the weather was cool even at midday. There were also a couple of small gift shops.

Ordering lunch at the Puncak Inn cafeThe Smokehouse is located further up the hill, along the road to the famous Jerlau Waterfall. It took about 5 minutes to drive up from the clock tower, past a mosque, the town council building, turning left uphill pass a second roundabout. That will take us past a small row of food stall - a must visit if you are visiting on a budget. We will then pass a children playground and a health center on the left. About 400 meters further, the Smokehouse will emerge on the left around a sharp bend.

I would have preferred PC Fair, but ....

Although the plan was to have a quiet afternoon in after my lunch, it turned out that Puan Anita (for which my wife will be referred to from now on) has other plans. She had earlier took the boys out for lunch at Sri Ayuthaya in Wangsa Maju with the in-laws. After the boys were full, she planned to leave them at home and ask me to drive her to MidValley. There is an exhibition there that she wanted to visit. Typical of her. It was called 'Modern Home and Lifestyle Fair'. I was wishing it was PC Fair instead!

Yes! The crowd was driving me crazy!Puan Anita likes this kind of things, especially when the children were not on tow. She will plan these visits ahead of time, often either here at MidValley or KLCC. This time around, a few items caught her eyes. Wallpapers and floor coverings. I did not pay much attention as I was looking at some beds and automatic gate system on the other side.

Where the big cars getting sorted by the valet when the parking is fullLooking down on the main galleryMidValley on Sunday afternoons were typically packed. We reached there as people were easing home, at around 3 pm. As today was the last day of the exhibition, they were giving away freebies and good offers. There was a Pioneer Blue-Ray player going at RM799. I was excited initially but unfortunately the salesperson put me off. It was something he said that changed my mind. A great way to lose business I thought. Mind you, the PS3 were going at RM1299 and they do come with Blue-Ray player as well. That may be a better deal all around if you are into games. I am happy with my PSP at the moment.

The main foyer at the GardensAs far as exhibitions go, this one was pretty average. Most of the exhibitions around KL always have this problem when it comes to expectations. As the name suggested, I was expecting many home gadgets to be shown, televisions, modern beds, state-of-the-art freezers and washing machines. Unfortunately it was nothing more than just a trip to Harvey Norman, although some of the offers were quite decent.

Another thing I was excited about was the Xmas decorations were in full swing both at the Megamall and the Gardens. There were many stalls and activities. Carol snugging, Santa and his grotto to mention a few. The decor here was definitely better than the one put up currently at KLCC and on par with Pavilion. I was also looking forward to see the decor at the Curve, IKANO and Sunway. These were the places to visit if you want to go festive.

Aqiqah at friend's place

My niece, Nana enjoying some cendolOccupied with the weekend happenings, I did not have much time to update the blog. One of my auntie came over from Kelantan and stayed with us for a couple of nights. I also attended a wedding in Nilai yesterday, driving my parents and sister over there.

I managed to catch the football match last night. United managed to net four goals despite using just a couple of gears and ending the match with an improbable back four. None of the back five were their regular and this can only be a good thing talking about the depth of the squad. However, the highlight was Chelsea's loss to Man Citeh. I wasn't sure what I enjoyed more, the fact of Chelsea having lost the game or the sight of Fat Frank missing the penalty late on which would have pulled his side level.

Consequently, I woke up late this morning for my ward round. It was however sorted by noon and I headed straight from UMMC to a family friend's place in Keramat. Our family have been close since I was in kindergarten and it was pretty nice to catch up on old times. I may have a spare couple of hours later today to finish my write-up about the Fraser's Hill trip, so watch this space.!

Bringing Irfan to Casualty

Even the gloomy Casualty room was lit up by a Xmas tree.I was woken up at around 4.30am with Irfan's coughing. He developed fever yesterday evening and has been looking toxic but was well enough to play. He was also coughing. After some paracetamol and cough medicine, he went to sleep.

When I was woken up, his cough has turned croupy. His chest was wheezing. Idlan is asthmatic but not Irfan. Our family are riddled with asthmatic anyhow. One of my Uncle passed away last year due to an asthma attack in Jordan.

I then got everyone into the car and sped off to the nearest Casualty which happens to be Gleneagle in Jalan Ampang for us. He continued to be wheezy on the way in. That only stopped after he saw the Doctor and given a nebuliser.

It's difficult to say if he will turn up to become asthmatic but it certainly looked that way. After the nebuliser, he slowly returned to his normal self. The wheeze subsided. The coughing reduced. His temperature also came down after some paracetamol. We left Casualty just before 5.45. We will have to return later at around 10 if the wheeze returns.
