Ole Ole from Sarawak

This was something new. And nice. During the afternoon ward round, one if my nurses just returning from her couple of weeks holiday in Sarawak brought these along. They were cooked by her Mum.

I heard of these, but never tasted it. The one above is called Lidah Buaya. Looks sweeter than it is, but once in your mouth, you just coukdnt stop asking for more. Dangerous stuff!

And it didn't stop there. I couldn't recall what the second was called, but they were just as nice.

Mother's Day Part I

Round One of our Mother's Day weekend dinner was at Makan Kitchen, Double Tree in KL. It used to be one of Anita's favourite but after tonight's affair, I don't think that she was in any hurry to return. It was, to put it mildly, disappointing.

The spread was poor, with only limited local selection. The main bulk happened to be Indian, and it was not great. I'm a fan of Indian food, but this was worst than the Mamak stalls. In fact, it was an insult to compare this to my local mamak. It was really bad. The rice was overcooked, while the naan was the opposite. The daal and curry was too plain - it seemed that they left the spices in the cupboard.

The only highlight was the satay. It was as tasty as I remembered it here and the peanut sauce that came with it was top notch. The kebab was not too bad either.

There was no salad, and there was no Japanese item on the spread. The dessert was also left wanting. There was only 3 dishes to go with rice if you wanted to go for the Malay selection. As for Chinese, the less mentioned the better.

Apparently they had a new chef just appointed to the outlet. A gregarious American gentleman called Adam who went from one table to another introducing himself. He only started there three weeks ago, previously stationed in China from what I heard. He certainly had his job cut out to sort out this shamble. And good luck to him.

So, for the next few months, I'll pass on coming back here.

Teppanyaki Disappointment

We had a nice dinner last night, although I would still have to wait ton have a fast of a proper sushi in Japan. It was a teppanyaki affair we had last night, and I opted for the seafood variety, which the chef was struggling to provide.

We ended up having some garden salad being cooked on a stone stove. In the end, even the chef came around and asked us what else we would like. But the opening gambit of fresh prawns, grilled in front of our very eyes was a successful one. The prawn was fresh, sweet and succulent. But everyone ended up with only one piece.

The miso was rather too salty. And although the meal as a whole was fine, I was expecting that bit extra. This being at the heart of Japan and all.

I was told that we as a group would be heading to a sushi bat tonight. Let's see what Japan dining is all about .... more entries from this trip here.

Homemade Yee Sang

Not done with the yee sang at the restaurant which we had last week, my brother-in-law brought with him some packed yee sang from Singapore, plus some fresh salmon. Her got them chopped, and off we went again after dinner. I ended up just having the yee sang and salmon for dinner and missed the rice. In fact, to be honest, it was more like salmon with yee sang as a side dish. I thought we went overboard on the salmon side.

Now, I was feeling hungry, but it was too late to scrounge for food. Time to go to bed, after a glass of milk ........ Good night!

Qurban Tomorrow

I noticed that most of the Qurban animals for this year were a button the thin side.

When I was at the caterers, they had the cows lined up for tomorrow. They all looked underfed. Poor fella. At Bukit Antarabangsa, Qurban would take place tomorrow rather than today. Today being Friday, the fear was, the Qurban would not be completed in time before the Raya prayers. So, my parents, as always would be right busy tomorrow.

I would be racing through my ward round before joining them tomorrow. Hopefully the weather would be kind.
