Another Anniversary Lunch

My parent-in-law celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary yesterday. When Anita was pregnant for Irfan, we went there for a fabulous lunch buffet at Genji, PJ Hilton. We went there again this time around for old times sake.

Over the years, the place retained the nice food although there were plenty of items being taken out from the menu now. No more oysters - my brother-in-law’s favourite. But the rack of sashimi was still sublime. So was the tempura and tappenyaki. Idlan especially loved it.

This way to Genji ...The startersWe spent a good couple of hours at the restaurant, taking multiple trips to the buffet line. By the end, the boys made their way through the food and picked up what they liked. We topped it up with a nice cake that Anita brought through an instagram advert. Pandan cake topped with gula melaka. Sublime! Even the restaurant staffs asked for a slice. A flavour not very common I guess ...

The restaurant was pretty secluded, located right at the deep end of the hotel on the first floor. I had to ask around for directions not being able to find the place from the car park.

Cosy interior

In the old days, one had to make an advance booking to get a table there. Now, there were plenty of fast sushi outlet as well as other competitions. The place was not as popular. In fact, despite being a Sunday lunchtime, patrons can walk in and ask for a table. It was something we never even dared to do before.

The food was great. Everybody enjoyed themselves. The staffs were very nice - all of them Malaysian. Definitely would be going there again now that we knew that the boys loved the food. Price-wise it was comparable with many 5-star restaurants in town, but this being a buffet and if you loved Japanese cooking, then it was well worth it ...

Family Dinner

As usual, when it came to birthday dinner, I would have to split my outings into 2. Sharing my birthday with my father-in-law meant that one of the celebration had to be a joint one. This time around, we had some Japanese food at a hotel. And Idlan certainly ate a lot more than we expected.

The last time I had a meal at Komura restaurant at Corus Hotel must have been more than 15 years ago. Their specialty was teppanyaki but that was not my favourite Japanese cooking. We ordered some bento from the menu instead and yes, though some of the items looked expensive, some of the selections were reasonable and the sashimi were certainly fresh.

Getting there was a pain though ...The only drawback was for a table of 6, we did not have a choice but to use one of the traditional Japanese tables where you sit on the floor with the table forming an island. It was tricky for my father-in-law to manoeuvre in and out.

But the food was fine and Idlan was telling his grandfather the tales of his trip to Bintan. He just couldn't stop talking. Maybe I would try the bento selection the next time I come here ...

Expressushi No More

Our favourite little sushi joint has moved on. They were no longer at Great Eastern Mall. The branch was now about 5 minutes away at a condominium complex. One of Anita's friend lives at the condo and last month, Anita and Idlan went to have a quick meal there.

Yesterday, while we were at the GE Mall where Irfan had his tooth filling done, we stopped by to see what was going on with the old venue.

It had now been renovated and taken over by a sundae shop called Squeeze Me Baby! Idlan was curious. We should've had a sample but he stood in awe instead and then left. No squeezing there...

Back to Express Sushi

The last time I went to Express Sushi must have been about a year ago. Busy work schedule and the location of Great Eastern Mall combined to keep it at that.

So, I returned for dinner there last night and it looked like the place had changed a bit. The menu stayed the same, and so was the food quality.

Still the potato salad is the BOMB!Not much difference from before but the eating area was now more comfortable. Would still recommend the place.

Birthday Lunch

Her birthday was tomorrow, but today being Sunday, seemed like a good idea to celebrate it now. So, my brother took us out for lunch at Sagano, Renaissance. Haven't been there for quite some time, but the Japanese buffet spread there was quite decent. The restaurant being on the quiet side with a nice ambiance helped.

My in-laws also came. We had a pleasant lunch although I joined up late as I had a long ward round this morning, having to go across to Ara Damansara to see a referral as well.

They were close to having dessert by the time I finally made it across town. But the place was still relatively empty and the sashimi platter was still full. I never looked back ....

Was the place really that good?

There, Idlan especially rediscover his love for all things teriyaki and promptly ate a full meal. He could hardly walk after that and we decided to have coffee at the front lobby before heading home.

After 45 minutes of sitting, Idlan then ordered a couple of macaroons. Oh boy! His energy level recharged full of sugar and he just couldn't sit still. It soone started to rain, which further delayed our departure. More excuse to just sit around and order another cup of mocha.

Time to hang around at the lobbyIdlan was full!I had to finish his macaroonsIt was almost 4 in the afternoon when we finally made it home.
