Awal Muharram - The Midweek Lull

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoA break in the middle of the week, which is the rarest and most civilised of luxuries. The trouble was the rain — a soft, insistent morning downpour of exactly the kind that turns the bed into an argument you're destined to lose. There is no more persuasive case for staying put than the sound of rain on glass before you've quite woken up. I lost the argument briefly, then got up anyway, as one does.

The ward round went ahead as usual, rain or no rain. The work doesn't observe public holidays of the heart, and the round has its own rhythm regardless of how reluctant its participants might feel. By the time it was done, the day had decided to behave, and I went to meet the afternoon properly.

Lunch was at TRX — Amazonas, which delivers every time and did so again. There's a confidence to a place that simply knows what it is and does it well, no fuss, no reinvention. You sit down, you eat properly, you leave content. After a damp start, it was exactly the right kind of indulgence.

Anita went off to inspect the new Mercedes F1 outfit, which tells you everything about where her attentions have wandered lately. She's back into the racing — properly back, the way one returns to an old enthusiasm and wonders why they ever left. I find there's something quite charming about watching someone rediscover a thing they love. The sport itself I can take or leave, but the renewed enthusiasm beside me is its own pleasant company.

Then, the film. Disclosure Day — Spielberg's return to the skies, the great man back among the lights and the wonder some fifty years on. I wanted to love it. I'd built a small cathedral of expectation around it. And it was, in the end, fine. Not the best of his work, not by a distance. There were moments where the old magic flickered, and rather more moments where it didn't. A perfectly decent way to spend a couple of hours, which from Spielberg feels faintly like an underachievement. You don't go to him for perfectly decent. Still — even his middling efforts have a craft to them that most directors would gladly claim as a peak.

The day closed with a haircut at Lucky Garden, that small reliable ritual that makes you feel marginally more put together than you did an hour earlier. There's a quiet satisfaction in it — the same chair, the same business, the brief sense of having tidied a loose end of yourself.

And now the evening winds down towards an absurd appointment: England playing at four in the morning. I'd like to say I'll have the discipline to sleep through it and catch the result over breakfast like a sensible adult. I'd like to say that. We'll see which version of me wins the argument when the alarm comes round — though I suspect, as with the rain this morning, I already know how it ends.

Movie to End the Year

I decided to stay in on the New Year Eve Night. Luckily there were no calls as well and I had a nice afternoon at home in front of the TV.

For a good few months, I really wanted to watch T2, the sequel to Trainspotting. And the best way to enjoy it would be to watch the original and the sequel back to back.

All the original cast were back. The original were darker compared to the sequel. The dialogue were sharper and the storyline tighter. A lot of clips were borrowed from the original in a kind of retelling of some of the stories through the eyes of Spud, one of the main original character.

Not quite the original classic but for the nostalgic, it brought some closure to some of the original storyline, explaining what happened in the 20 years between the two movies. If you were a fan of the original movie, T2 is definitely worth a look. If you haven't seen the original, you could do yourself a favour and watch both one after the other. You will understand the reason behind it afterwards.

The Homecoming

It has been a while since we went to watch a movie together. ANita was keen to watch the new Spiderman movie although the boys were dead against it. Apparently their friends had gone to watch and we left disappointed. But Anita insisted.

So, off we went to watch it on Sunday under protest from Irfan especially. He was adamant that he was going to sleep throughout the movie.

In the end, he was the one most excited. He couldn't stop giggling and Idlan kept on repeating the jokes afterwards. So much for wanting to sleep. It was better than I expected, and I must say that I had never been a fan of the Spiderman franchise.

"Baby Driver" would be next, but that would be minus the boys ...

The Pulp Never Dies

Of the movies I had seen in the last 20 or more years, there had been a few which left an impression on me. Forrest Gump was one of them. And Pulp Fiction was another.

Looking through my Netflix, I found out that it was available in Malaysia. The uncut version of it. Hence I could watch and listen to the dialogue in all its glory. Mind you, I actually bought a copy of the script since I found it that intriguing. It would just not going to be the same if it was censored.

I watched it while waiting for dinner earlier and the way Tarantino weaved his way through the storyline was truly masterful. The pacing, the cutting, the story arch were just perfect and everything just fell into place right in the end .... A true modern classic!

Projek Sambung Sekolah

It was indeed a pleasure. One of my colleague at Hospital Ampang found that barrier to getting treatment while patients were suffering from cancer came in many forms. Often the treatment took 6 months and although the actual treatment cost was free or next to nothing, there were other cost which the patients also faced. The cost of time and loss of income.

The Doctors could do only so much to lessen their burden with the help of the Social Services but their children’s needs usually took a back seat.

As the show was about to start ....

He devised a plan to support the children of cancer sufferers financially and morally to make sure that they do not miss school and miss out on their education.

As a money-raising event, the organiser, the Max Family sold tickets to attend a showing of Pete’s Dragon at CITTA Mall. I bought some and attended the showing this morning although sadly Anita and the boys couldn’t come. I went there straight after my ward rounds as it was only 10 minutes away from SJMC.

After some inspirational talks and experience-sharing we were off - plus free popcorns from the venue sponsors, MBO Cinemas. Unfortunately I could not watch the movie until the end as I was getting phone calls. Good movie actually, and with great soundtrack.

The event was for a good cause and I was glad that I could contribute. I would definitely jump in again to contribute the next time a fund-raising was needed.
