Kedai Kopi Pak Lang

The much-awaited asam laksa treat

Got my fix for asam laksa this afternoon. Unfortunately it wasn't as good as I remembered it to be ..... partly disappointing, but at least I got some me time. We left the kids at the apartment with the maids. Anita went shopping while I walked over to Pak Lang's.

Apparently this is a tribute to Aruah Pak Lang, a Navy Captain, who died in 2006. I don't know the whole story unfortunately. Maybe one day when I have the time, I can talk to one of the waiters and find out a bit more. From my observation, in the last few years, there has been a rise in the popularity of old-style coffeshops, affectionately known as kopitiam. I remember when I was a boy, kedai kopi is where the kampung folks gather. Where is granddad? At kedai kopi. Where to find uncle after Maghrib prayers? Kedai kopi. Where to catch the latest wrestling match on TV - used to be known as WWF, then changed to WWE? Kedai kopi.

Nowadays, there are the mamak shops. But people are clearly growing tired of it. There wanted to try something different from time to time .... hence the rise of the kopitiams! For the yuppies, there are Starbucks and the free internet. Bear in mind though, for the cost of a single mug of coffee at Starbucks, you can get yourself dinner for the night at the mamaks and kopitiams. If the mamaks has tandoori and teh tarik as their specialty, the kopitiams have roti bakar and kopi 'O'! But Pak Lang has asam laksa! Now, that is special!

Got a text from my brother-in-law who was on the way back to KL. Apparently he was stuck behind a huge convoy of Negri Sembilan football fans driving up to Bukit Jalil for the Malaysia Cup Final tonight. It was a huge queue, but right at the front, there was a small car waving a Kelantan flag. No worries, there were no accidents!

Stalls by the beach - Teluk Kemang

After breakfast, we went for a stroll at Teluk Kemang. The stalls were all opened already selling beach gears, souvenirs and the likes. It was far too warm however to stay for too long.

It turned out that my father-in-law and brother will be driving down from KL to join us for lunch. A quick trip for groceries next before lunch.

Waking up to the sound of the waves

I survived the drive last night but by the time I reached PD the back got even stiffer. Some heat plaster and massage sorted that out before I went to bed. Waking up this morning it didn't feel half as bad.

What to do today? Having breakfast at the Golf Club at the moment. Will be heading to the town later to do some shopping. If I got the time, I might head out for asam laksa and checking out the pasar malam later in the afternoon.

PD - Final Day

PD 2-5, originally uploaded by Haris Abdul Rahman.

We only stayed in PD until Merdeka Day. Since we did not hit the beach on the second day, the boys demanded that we go down before we leave for KL. The morning was rather windy and overcast, so we made our trail at around 10am.

Thistle main lobbyAs usual, they were playing in the sands. Since the tide was low, some of the sands that they dug contained shells and crabs. That got them really excited. Idlan then took up a crabshell and his pet and named him Peter. We spent a good hour at the beach until the clouds open up and the day became too hot. I got some sunburn on my back since I took off my shirt when I went for a dip. It is still smarting now and I think the skin is going to start peeling soon.

We then took Peter and some live shells up to our apartment. Idlan wasnted to bring the crabshell home. However, I was not sure if we can look after it in KL, so I had to let it back to the see. On the way back to KL, Idlan kept on crying. He was still asking about Peter when he woke up the next day. That's when we decided to get him a pet. That's why we got the current Peter and Jane for him.

Ping Pong anyone? We got back to KL at around 4. The traffic was heavy around Seremban, but it got better right after. All together, it was a nice weekend. I just cannot believe how cheap the food was over there compared to here in KL. A Ramadhan buffet at a 5-star facility for under RM40? That will just not happen in KL.
