Day One

The first day just flew by and it has been a long and tiring one. It was basically non-stop lecture from morning till about 5.30pm. We even had talks during the lunch break. And tomorrow morning, there will be a talk during breakfast. There was another satellite symposium later in the day, with dinner slapped in of course, but I don't think my brain could take it any longer. Instead, I went out with a few colleagues to Clarke Quay, on the other sude of town.

Dinner was a seafood affair, and it was great. I thought I may have doubled my cholesterol level with the amount of crab that I took. After dinner, we had a stroll down the quay, the weather being being very warm, with clear sky and full moon, made it it a relaxing one. Being Friday night, the place was packed and happening. It was the hip part of town, full of trendy bars, restaurant and clubs. Since we were all rather tired, we did not stay for too long. After 30 minutes, we climbed back onto the minibus, taking us back to the hotel.

Maybe I would catch some TV but honestly, I could do with an early night. Just called Anita and the boys, hitting the showers, then bed .... I'll blog more about Clarke Quay later as most of the photos were taken on my LX3.

Irfan's Birthday Dinner

It was Irfan's fifth yesterday. I took an unplanned leave sorting out some personal stuffs, and in the evening we went out for a birthday dinner. In the last few days, we have been asking Irfan what he liked to have for a dinner outside and he kept telling us Indian food. He liked his biryani and papadoms of course. So, walla! We went to Spice of India over at KLCC and brought the birthday cake along.

Food was OK but since the place was packed, all the waiters and waitresses were busy and our orders did get mixed up. We sort of like understood what went on, but the table next door thought differently. It wa occupied by an Indian family and judging from the accent, they must be from mainland India. The young lady there really knew how to boss the waitresses around. Such a bitch!

The main thing was Irfan enjoyed himself. The cake came out last, so was the presents. And everybody went home happy! The main party with his friends will be later next week though!

Sunset Dinner

Oh! No! I think United for beaten. Certainly Villa was playing much better. Can't really complete if we got beat. They were just better in every department. Unfortunately, we did not have ESPN in our rooms. I warned the match at the bar with a colleague from Penang. He was an Arsenal supporters and did not stay for the second half.

We had a nice sunset dinner earlier. By nice, I meant the setting was nice, outdoors by the pool. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the food. The salad was lame, and the rice dishes were basically fish, vegetables and chicken in layer of oil an inch thick. It was supposed to an outdoor barbecue dinner, and the only barbecue on offer was roast lamb. More cholesterol. I gave that a miss.

The company was good though. Spent the time chatting to guests from Australia and a colleague from private practice. I also spent time talking to a Pharmacist from Kelang, Ian. He also have an iPhone, a jailbroken unit. He put me through the paces of the alternative app store, where he could get most of the apps I owned for free. In return, I should him how I utilised my phone. Certainly I was more of an outlier from the way I use it.

U left the bar after Villa scored their second as the in house bags started playing their set. I can't really concentrate on the game by then, being tired did not help. I have another session tomorrow and have to pack early so as not to rush when we check out. The transport will be after lunch, catching a 4 pm. Flight. InsyaAllah, I should reach home by 6. I really need to rest after that as my Dad-in-law will be admitted on Monday for angiogram the next morning. Rays will be Wednesday and I may have to drive to Penang to visit my grandmother. She had been unwell lately and the whole family were concerned. I will be on leave on Thursday and Friday, and then will travel for an overnight stay in PD for another meeting.

Birthday Celebration

Yeah! 38 today! Should be grateful with everything Allah gave me, family, stability and health. This year, with my colleague returning from Ireland, I have decided to take some time off work, to celebrate the birthday and also the World Cup Finals. It happened to be my father-in-law’s 75th as well on the same day - quick tip, one sure way of getting a father’s blessing in marrying his daughter is to have the same birthday. It was also a sure way to make sure your wife remember your birthday and for the kids to get really confused and started asking - “who’s birthday is it really? Dad or Granddad?”. Worked for me like a charm!

Irfan didn't think much of itWhile Idlan busy smearing his bread ..... la di daIt was a bright start for the day. Gorgeous weather. I had the duty of being a chairman of a session for the Malaysian Society of Transplantation in Subang in the late morning. So I had lunch with a few friends there. Had to rush back since Puan Anita had a date with on Edward Cullen - don’t really know who the hell he is, heard that he is dead ugly! - at  the cinemas. So I was on babysitting duty. The highlight of the day will be dinner at Harrods. We booked a table for eight with one of our auntie coming along. Since we booked for dinner at 6.30, there were hardly any other patron at the restaurant, which was sensible since the boys were in their elements, running around and all.

I went for asparagus as starterEverybody had the beef and Yorkshire pudWhile I had some codCheers eveyoneEverybody ordered beef and Yorkshire Pudding - sigh! I went for the cod instead! Even Idlan finished a couple of slices of the roast. Fat boy! We enjoyed some cakes and pudding afterwards. Thank you Puan Anita for organising the dinner for me and Dad. After all the medical scars he gone through earlier in the year, having to be admitted twice into UMMC, there were course for celebration. It’s a shame that my other two brother-in-laws can't join us. One was abroad, and another had a prior engagement.

A slice of birthday cake to finish things offBread and butter puddingBurp! However the celebration has not finished yet. We were planning to travel for seafood lunch today on Sunday to Kuala Selangor. More food ahoy! I was also eternally grateful for all the facebook messages, tweets and emails I received to wish me a Happy Birthday. Really appreciated them.

Anniversary Dinner

It was not actually our anniversary - yet! We celebrated my in-law’s 50th anniversary the other night, but unfortunately none of their other children were able to make it. We took them out for dinner, just the four of us and them. We initially wanted to bring them to Seri Negara - the other, some might say the better, half of Carcosa Seri Negara. We got in the act rather late, hence the place was already fully booked with a corporate event.

The next choice was Shangri-La. Again, the places were already fully taken up. We had to settled with our usual Chinese eatery at Corus Hotel - used to be called Ming Court - the Ming Palace. Anita did the booking, but we let the happy couple do the ordering. The dinner was delayed by the unexpected heavier traffic than normal leading out of Jalan Ampang. The boys were already grumpy by the time we reached there.

The condimentsIdlan just about managing it with the chop sticksMing Palace serves mainly Szechuan cooking, but the thing we likes about the place is the fact that we can modify the orders if we like to and even order off menu. This is important so that the boys can get what they wanted to eat. Corus has a few other eateries, such as the Japanese and Thai downstairs. Therefore, if Puan Anita decided to sneak in some tom yam if she liked to, she can just order. No issue. The service was also very prompt and most of the waiters already knew my Dad-in-law from his various visits there entertaining his business clients. The lady who served us also remembered Idlan from his birthday dinner we had here last year.

The food for the boys arrived first, and after the finished up, there started to go hyper. I ended up having to chase them around the rest of the evening! Spoilt brats.

For starters, we had four season salad and crabmeat soup - I’m not a fan of shark fin. The best order for me that evening was the steamed cod. It was lightly marinated by soy sauce and some ginger, but otherwise left untouched. I ended up finishing it off and sipping the sauce. For dessert, we had longan and sea coconut. The ambiance was what you would expect from a decent, established Chinese restaurant, and so was the price. It was on the expensive side I must say. The service was prompt and the waiters certainly knew their menu and helped in making up our order.

The sea coconut and longanIt will not be fair to ask me whether we will come here again, since it is one of my in-law’s favourite joints. They have private rooms to accommodate business dinners, and family occasions. My children liked the privacy of the rooms. They can run around the table without the worry of knocking anything. As mentioned, the price was a bit on the steep side, but they do great seasonal discounts and good deals with credit cards payments - you get discounts of up to 20% with certain credit providers. But, no, I will not be taking friends here - it was far too expensive!
