Sunday, Slightly Underdone

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoRounds were smooth this morning — in and out with the kind of efficiency that makes you wonder why every day can't be like this. Back well before noon, the Sunday still intact, the afternoon wide open. These are the mornings you bank against the ones that don't go as cleanly.

Anita had plans. Specifically, she had a craving for Pal Gae Ook at KLCC, the Korean place that's served us well in the past. The key phrase there being "in the past." Something had shifted. Several items on the menu were unavailable, which is never an encouraging start, and what did arrive felt like a lesser version of itself. The marinade — the thing that makes or breaks Korean food — had lost its conviction. Not terrible, just diminished, as though someone had followed the recipe but forgotten the point of it. It's a particular disappointment when a place you've trusted quietly lowers its own bar. You don't make a scene. You just recalibrate your expectations and silently cross it off the mental shortlist.

Kinokuniya afterwards, which is always a reliable antidote to a mediocre meal. There's something about wandering a good bookshop that resets the day — the smell of new pages, the unhurried browsing, the pleasant fiction that you have time to read everything that catches your eye. Azul's book was still on display, which gave me a small flush of reflected pride. There's a quiet thrill in seeing someone you know on a bookshop shelf, proof that they did the thing they said they were going to do. Well done, that man.

I also picked up next season's Manchester United jersey, which is either an act of faith or an act of stubbornness depending on how you feel about the current trajectory. New kit, same hope. The cycle continues. It looked good, though, which at this point might be the most reliable thing about the club.

A cappuccino at Smith & Wollensky rounded things off nicely — good coffee, a comfortable seat, the kind of pause that makes a Sunday afternoon feel properly earned. KLCC humming away beyond the window, the weekend winding down at its own pace.

And then the phone. A case in ICU, which is the sort of call that doesn't negotiate with your afternoon plans. Back to the hospital, the shift in gears now familiar if never entirely welcome. You go, you do what's needed, you come home. The day bends around it.

Dinner was quiet — just Anita and me, nothing elaborate, the kind of meal that's more about proximity than presentation. The evening settled into that particular Sunday stillness, the week ahead not yet asserting itself but faintly visible on the horizon. A mixed day, really. Some of it exactly what you'd want from a weekend, some of it less so. But that's the texture of things. Not every Korean marinade can be perfect, and not every Sunday stays uninterrupted. You take what the day gives you and call it enough.

That Giant Ketupat

Suria KLCC had always use the area just by the fountain entrance to erect monuments. It ranged from Xmas tree to giant lantern for Chinese New Year. This time around for Aidilfitri, it was almost the same as last year, a giant ketupat!

Not exactly original but there you have it.

At the central foyer, there had a stage and a stalls, all around an old kampung house. There was a traditional troupe playing when I visited, popular with the tourist.

As usual, we are obsessed with building tall structures and breaking records. The tall ketupat was recorded as the tallest ever built in Malaysia, with a sign proclaiming so ...

Deepavali at the Malls

Last weekend, I had the chance to hit the town for a quick walk. It was the weekend after Deepavali and the decorations were still up. It had been a while since I had the chance to go out with my camera and explore.

I was lucky enough to be able to stop at both Suria KLCC and later Pavilion and I just could not resist the chance. It was just too good ....

The one at Suria featured a couple of giant peacocks in the middle of the main foyer. With their long tails and shimmering lights of the main atria, the colours were just great.

The decorations at Pavilion was slightly different. It was more traditional with large kolam filling up the main floor. The other day, they had a dance troupe doing their merry dance there. Quite a spectacle ...

I wished that I had time to explore Nu Sentral which is located right in the heart of Brickfields ....

Decided on Me Time

Enough was enough and I decided to devote my Sunday .... to me. Good thing that Anita was out with her friends, I went into town, had some biryani lunch at Masjid India. Took my camera out and walk around town.

Catching my ride from my parking spot, KL SentralFirst stop would be to get some biryaniThe biryani here at Restoran Shahira is not bad at all. A hidden gem!Managed to catch an exhibit or two, before sitting down for a long lunch. For the last 6 straight Sundays I had been at the hospital and it was high time that I stayed away for once. I also had a few days leave lined up from next weekend, so I decided to switch off.

Seeing what's cooking in the bazaar ...Plenty of people coming and going ....Before I walk across to Medan Pasar ....The weather was nice for a walkabout, and I used the time to get myself acquainted with my new camera bag. Yesterday I put a couple of camera bodies in them and it felt a tad too heavy. It had better balance with just one, plus an iPad and some dongles. That was better. And I didn't have to worry about my wallet as well. Everything was in the bag. I only wished that the sides were a bit more sturdy and it tended to lose its shape if I didn't put the content the right way.

Off to Suria for some coffeeThat escalated to some bite ....And a bit of blogging ....So, I planned to enjoy another couple of hours to myself and hopefully there won't be anybody ringing. Happy Sunday!

A Quick Outing

I had a free evening after berbuka last Wednesday and Anita asked if I could drive her to KLCC since she had something to pick up there. I had not been to KLCC since the beginning of Ramadhan, so I thought why not.

It gave me the chance to have a look at the decorations as well.

Looking down from the upper floorThose aren't real fire. They were small LED bulbs underneath twirling paper leaves. Clever idea!Unfortunately you were not allowed to get near the house! And I saw plenty of durians. Maybe it was part of the theme? And some old bicycles .... supposed to make us feel like at a kampungAbout as close as we could getAgain, they had a giant erection by the fountain. This time it was a mega-huge ketupat! Creative? Not so sure about that.

At the main concourse, there was a replica of a Malay house. No activities when we were there but I noticed a stage in front of it. I was sure there would be some shows during the days and weekends. As usual, there were stalls - selling expensive clothes and cookies by the side.

Somehow it didn't feel original.... even the lantern looked like it has been used before

Nothing special. Anita got her shopping and we were off.
