Arrivals and Offerings - Aidil Adha 2026

Please click the photo above to play the daily videoThe alarm went off at a hour that barely qualifies as morning, but there was no reluctance in it. Some early starts carry their own momentum, and driving to KLIA to collect Irfan is one of them. The roads were empty in that particular way they only manage on public holidays — the kind of quiet that makes KL feel like it's still deciding whether to wake up.

I reached the airport just after six, expecting a wait. KLIA on Aidil Adha morning has a stillness to it that you'd never believe if you've only seen it during peak season — all that polished marble and soaring architecture with almost nobody in it. As it turned out, the wait was shorter than planned. Irfan's flight landed a full forty-five minutes early, which is the kind of pleasant surprise that airlines so rarely deliver. He appeared through arrivals looking well, and just like that, the thing I'd been quietly looking forward to all week was done. Everyone home.

We were back by eight, the morning still young and full of possibility. The day's main obligation was the Qurban in Bukit Antarabangsa — the ritual sacrifice that sits at the heart of Aidil Adha. There's a particular atmosphere to these gatherings: communal, unhurried, purposeful. People milling about in the morning warmth, children darting between adults, the whole thing proceeding with the quiet organisation of something that happens every year and knows its own rhythm. We were all done by lunchtime, everything handled with satisfying efficiency.

Afterwards, the decision was made — as it often is on these occasions — to have some beef. When the day has already centred around the animal, it feels only right. We passed our share of the Qurban meat along to relatives, which is part of the whole spirit of the thing. The giving is the point, really.

The afternoon pivoted to something altogether more secular: shopping. Anita had a Rimowa trunk in her sights, and who am I to stand between a woman and well-engineered luggage? There's something almost architectural about Rimowa — the ridges, the precision, the satisfying click of the latches. A proper object. Then it was my turn for some clothes, because apparently one cannot live on the same rotation of shirts indefinitely, however strongly one might feel otherwise.

By the time we got home, the day felt genuinely full — the kind of full that comes from variety rather than exhaustion. Airport at dawn, Qurban by mid-morning, retail therapy by afternoon. Three quite different acts, all slotting together into something that felt complete.

Another day off tomorrow, which is a luxury worth savouring. But tonight, like last night, an early one. The body keeps its own counsel on these matters, and mine was making its position very clear.

Reaching KK

The flight to KK was a smooth one although there was a warning from the pilot that there would a stretch which was cloudy. But it was smooth enough that I managed to each one whole movie.

Taken 3. Not a bad movie. A nice one to pass the time and took my mind off wondering about terbulance. We landed just after 7 pm and were taken to the hotel in town by a waiting van.

A quick drink before heading to the gateTime to move ...Now, waiting to boardChecked in followed by dinner. And when it came to KK, it must be seafood. So, I was taken back into town, had a superb dinner and back to the hotel for a nice shower. More about the food later I supposed. It was time for me to catch some sleep. The conference starting tomorrow, and it would a long day.

Going Through the List

Before my flight to Kuching, Anita handed me a list of what to get. As the schedule was pretty tight, I had to rely on others to take me to the venue to do a bit of shopping. Luckily everybody had the same idea as I did.

Just a single stop in town for kek lapis and salted terubuk. But Anita was glad that I made the stop.

Pick and choose!

One thing that was great about the vendors there was they seemed to have understood that those turning up at their door would be bringing the food items across to Semenanjung on the flight. So, the items were tightly and neatly package into compact boxes. All I had to do was bring it to the airport. I even managed to check the boxes in into the luggage compartment. Great!

Thank God, my boxes turned up in one piece at KLIA ..….

Bomoh VIP

One needed to laugh. And I couldn't think of a bigger laugh today than what happened at KLIA. Specifically the bomoh at the departure lounge of the airport.

It was so funny, that even we as a nation had to put our hands up and just laugh. We just admit to the rest of the World that this still happen here. Smile and move the conversation along.

It had been a major meme, trending worldwide. Malaysia would again be known throughout the world for the wrong reason. But what to do....

At least it lightened the mood on an otherwise gloomy week. Still waiting to hear the news of #MH370. If had been five days now...

Back-ache

It was a tradition for me to blog as soon as I reached home from a trip. So, here we go. The trio on the whole was great but the flight back was a nightmare. We were not talking about turbulence or haze of the likes. It was more on the comfort zone.

As mentioned, I would blog more about the 777-300 as a plane, but clearly KLM was raking in profit for this Amsterdam-KL-Jakarta route as it was full and it was an achievement cramping 425 seats on this plane. That was even more than MAS managed to fit into their 747-400. Talk about efficiency. I shall leave that rant for later.

As for now, I decided to take the ERL into KL Sentral, enjoying the haze along the way. The flight got delayed landing at KLIA and since the plane would be taking off again to Jakarta, the unloading of the bags took a bit longer than usual. It was well after 4 pm when I finally managed to get my stuffs organised and went over to the exit.

The lift to ERL was full, so as usual I tried the escalator to the ground floor. It wasn't working. I decided to carry my bags down myself. From the ground floor, again the escalator was switched off finger to the ubdergraound ERL terminal. So much for a World Class airport eh?

I finally reached KL Sentral at 5, a quick ride on the cab and I was home. It was great to be back.

More write-up on the trip here.
