KL in Mono

Capturing photos in monochrome allowed one to concentrate on the contrast of the captures, leaving away the worry of colour balance and distraction. Some may say that it was an easy way out. It was if you got an eye for the shots. I have used many mono conversion applications in the past - with Silver Efex Pro from Nik springing to mind.

In the era of smartphones, the Leica-tuned P10 was a winner. I had been using the mono effect almost consistently - since the phone had a separate 20 MP mono sensor built in. The results, with some minimum tweaking had always brought a smile to my face.

Last month, I decided to go around time only carrying the phone. I was snapping away and just using apps on the phone to edit after. I would then upload straight only my flickr feed. It was a revelation. That inspired me to open a new instagram account ....

Shimmering

It was a gorgeous Saturday morning as I ambled my way from bed to get ready for the Saturday morning clinic. I have just returned from Singapore the evening before and could do with a lie in. But this was a Saturday and it would be a riot in store if I start my clinic late.

As I munch through my breakfast, I saw some warm sunshine peeking through the curtains. Got my phone out, and I was blessed with such shimmering sunrise ...

Amazing how even a simple smartphone - a P10 Plus mind you - could capture such beauty ....

Taking a Peek

Finally I get to hold it in my hands. Huawei had just opened their flagship shop at Pavilion Elite this morning and later in the afternoon I gave it a visit. Had a few minutes with the P10 Plus and the camera looked promising. Very slick, especially the monochrome shots. All 20 MP of them.

My experience with the P9 had been a mixed bag as the camera function lacked the finesse of the iPhone. It didn’t capture the geolocation as readily - in fact most of the time that data was missing and I had to enter the locations manually - and the name of the camera when uploaded onto Flickr was rather confusing. Again, I used an app to alter the metadata before uploading.

The jpg coming from the camera was amazing though and I was able to do a lot more alteration with aperture once uploaded onto my Mac Pro. The exposure latitude was wider and the lens was definitely very sharp - and I dare say sharper than the iPhone.

Hopefully the upcoming iteration would have addressed those issues. Let’s see what brings when the actual unit was released ...
