Mixed Feelings

Idlan joined SSU - Sekolah Sri Utama - back in 2008 in kindergarten. He spent 3 years in pre-school before starting primary school, finishing off with his UPSR last year. He left a couple of weeks after the exam to join the school he is at now.

Irfan also joined as a 4-year-old back in 2010 and will be leaving in September. It looked like we would be completing our 9 year association with the school soon and I was there today to pay for Irfan’s term fees, which would eventually be the last for him. With that fee paid, it meant that this may be the last bit of business I would be doing with the school except for collecting the school bond when Irfan leaves later.

Over the years, it was clear that the school was heading for a decline. They were actually lucky as there were a number of schools nearby that had completely closed over the years. SSU was still surviving, but I fear for their future. The quality of the teachers had deteriorated. They had a number of headmasters recently, with one only just recently resigned. Most of the teachers were local - the last headmaster was Caucasian. With a PhD. I didn’t think that he was a perfect fit from day one.

One of my main gripe was the fact that the school do not have a Parents-Teachers Association. Dissemination of informations had been weak over the years, much to my frustration. And there were no avenue for us to voice our concerns. I did write a letter to the then headmaster when Idlan left, and he did reply back. From the tone of his email, I could sense that he was just as frustrated with the arrangement at the school.

The school Idlan - and later Irfan - would be moving to was way different to Sri Utama. They put a lot of emphasis on parents’ participation, their activities were great and Idlan had definitely moved on from. He was miserable in the last couple of years at Sri Utama. We told the teachers about that but unfortunately they weren’t at all interested.

I still have a soft spot for Sri Utama. It was convenient when we were living in Gombak before. Time has changed and the school had certainly been left behind .... We were still in contact with some of the teachers from yesteryears. They still remembered the two boys, and how they had grown over the years .... I still had the photo of Idlan’s first day at Sri Utama in 2008 framed on the wall at the house in Gombak.

Another Concert

Another year, and it was time for another concert. This time around, both Idlan and Irfan participated in the same dance routine and it was one of the earlier ones. Which meant we could make a quick escape soon afterwards.

This time around, the organisation was much better than yesteryears. We didn't have to wait long for the concert to start, and the speeches were pretty simple. In fact, it was only one speech I thought.

Entering the hallIdlanIrfanAfter the concertTechnical issues were also not a factor this time around and the flow of the participants were Lai straight forward.

The venue was the same as before, at the HGH Convention Centre in Sentul. The place was recently upgraded and the facilities were lunch better than before. Parking however was still a hassle, but luckily we got our driver to sort that one out.

We were ready to go by about 11.30 and was back to the apartment before hoing out again for an early lunch. I had to go early since I had a meeting later in the afternoon as well as a dinner talk - which I decided to skip as to spend some time at home as well as taking my drone out for a weekend spin.

Back to Havoc

So, school started yesterday for the boys and they have collected mountains of homework already in the last couple of days. Back to the usual routine and Idlan had been sulking all evening.

So, we went through his syllabus and found out that in maths especially, there was nothing much new compared to last year, only that the concept were explored in more details.

Idlan got bored after a while and gave up when it came to Bahasa Melayu. He was never into languages I was afraid, but the thing was for UPSR, 4 of the 6 assessment would be in languages. He better get himself sorted soon.

So, we did the homework together after he came back from tuition earlier and soon after he was begging to go to bed. Poor boy!

Revision Weekend

No outing this weekend since the boys were in the middle of their end-of-year exams. So, the home situation was rather tense, and my job was to ferry the food in.

Irfan wanted some Chinese and Idlan wanted some beef. Obliged. And still they were late to go to sleep last night. Getting them up for school this morning proved to be a challenge.

Will be on call today, so I won't be able to help out tonight. Best of luck boys ...

Stay Extended

Instead of leaving the apartment to return to Gombak last Sunday, we decided to extend the stay until after Chinese New Year. The fact that the boys' school would be closed for almost ten days during the CNY period sealed the decision.

And I was happy with that.

That would make planning for Irfan's birthday easier to manage, and with me being on call during the CNY period, less headache for me.

Next thing would be slowly buying stuffs to fill up the apartment. The place was still bare. Homey touches desperately needed....
