The Rig

As it was in the past election, I kept a close eye on the results as they trickle in. Rather than wait to hear it on mainstream channels, social media was the way to go.

My Mac Pro were rigged to them allowing me to blast the reports through twitter and facebook as they came in.

I used a multi-column tweetdeck app to monitor twitter with keywords and mentions, while another screen scour the RSS feeds using feedly and of course facebook though the web browser.

Stock for the night ...I had instagram on the phone and to disseminate my tweets, I used tweetcaster pro, which allowed me to simultaneously post on both twitter and facebook with just one click. I ended up usign the phone to send out posts attached to a bluetooth physical keyboard allowing me to type fast and post ont the fly.

The disappoinitng thing was how slow it took for the results to reach us. SPR really let us down - and Karim Raslan really had a go on live TV - and it was bordering on frustration. Once the results started to come in, it was evident that the then opposition were gaining ground.

SPR optimistically - and somewhat arrogantly - promised that the results would be done and dusted by 10 pm, but it was not to be. When Tun Mahathir came live on the air at around 1.30 am putting pressure on the commission, then finally things were moving.

Clearly the Chairman was unprepared with the shift that night and since there were plenty of results not going as expected, they had to do more checks and recounts. This raised the suspicion of the so-called “black magic” which were rife in previous elections. The Chairman also had to answer the question on why the voters who came earlier that 5 pm were not allowed to vote despite queueing for hours before to get to the room. He simply did not hvae the details and looked stunned. There were also an imbalance in the number of voters paired with centers with clearly they had too many voters than they could cope.

Karim Raslam really went mental after elarning that Tony Pua had a majority of more than 100,000. Clearly there were just too many voters at the constituency.

Almost out of kuaci .... but many of the results were still pendingThe results were more or less confirmed by 3 am and despite the tally was not ready for Sabah, I had to call it the night. I was already tired from my tons of posts and reply. Suffice to say that it was an interesting night and the rig worked like a charm ....

The New Desk

Following Ba’s passing, we decided to convert my old study room into a guess room. We didn’t have one before and with both Idlan and Irfan growing up fast, they deserve their own space and rooms. The extra room which I had been using had to go.

We bought a new bed and off one toy huge table we bought from Ikea a few years back. So, for the past 4 months, I didn’t’t have my own dedicated space to put my stuffs or do my work. Getting a nice work table at reasonable price was not easy. I went through few options but for one reason or another, none of them were taken up.

Finally a few weeks ago I plumped for one. It just got delivered today. It was at a nice height and width and it fit perfectly into our bedroom. I reassembled my Mac Pro - minus a second screen unfortunately - and so far it had been great. The view - straight through the window up the hill was not too bad either ...

I would still need to get myself a table lamp since the screens were a bit too bright to work at night. I could feel the strain after 20 minutes in front of the computer. The rest of the evening were spent updating the software and upgrading to High Sierra.

Update Day

A week has passed since the iOS update and now Sierra was released. I decided to fresh boot my Mac Pro and started from scratch. It was not as painful as I thought it was going to be. The only problem was the driver for my Razer keyboard was not yet updated, so I was back with the Apple keyboard. No big deal but I have to cut down on the gaming a bit.

All the other programs seemed OK. Even the Aperture - which is no longer natively supported by Apple seemed to working fine.

And then came Nougat ....On the same morning, I also got a message that my Nexus had Nougat ready for download! Off we go!

The New Workhorse

My current main desktop system was a 4 year-old iMac 23-inch, running Mountain Lion since it was the only OS which can connect to my P1 dongle for internet connection. Not ideal, but that was the best I could do in Gombak.

At the apartment, I have a 30Mb fibre connection and it seemed that all the bandwidth being utilised only on iPad and Mac Book was rather a waste. I decided to get a new desktop permanently stationed at the apartment. I thought about a new iMac, but I decided to go a step further than that. A system which could easily last me for another 4 years.

Walla, I ordered the Mac Pro and I received the delivery last week. I spent the time since then tweaking the peripherals and decided on which monitor to use. The main one was easy, I also ordered an Apple Thunderbolt display which also served as the main speakers, camera and microphone. I got a second similar-sized monitor from Dell. And I also installed a third monitor in the form of a Wacom Cintiq tablet. That provide touch interface for photo editing as well as an input mode for the whole system if needed. The dual graphics card system sorted the resolution out with minimal effort.

I also installed Parallels for running Windows 7 concurrently. No issues. I could run Windows on one screen while keeping Mavericks on the other monitor. And I was able to play games at maximum resolution and setting on the Windows part.

I also bought a Thunderbolt WD external hard drive connected to the Mac Pro. The on board SSD was only 256 Gb, hence I save space by using the external drive for my Aperture and iPhoto library. The 10Gb/sec transfer time meant that there was no lag even when I opened the photo for editing on Photoshop. I decided against wifi storage mainly for speed. When I have time, I might dabble into video editing - in 4K maybe.

A lot to discover still with the new system and it would take a while before I realise the real potential, as only a handful of the current crop of apps were able to utilise more than couple of processor cores, 64 bit operation and dual graphic processor. The system was no slouch ….

So far, I have yet to encounter any hardware issues with the system. I might add on more memories to the system in the future, but that would be about it.

A Hiatus

I knew it had been a while since my last update. I had been writing about my trip to Pangkor but was unable to upload since I have yet to sort out the photos. Work just got in the way.

I finally for those photos sorted - using the new Mac Pro of course - more on that later - and today, I would be on call. So, more delays.

We spent the Easter break - the boys on term leave - at the apartment. That was where my workstation was parked. The boys got some new games for their their PS3, and had been at it since yesterday.

Our maid was also given leave for the Easter weekend, so it was only four of us at the apartment until Sunday. But I couldn't imagine it being a quiet one though ...
