The Driver

Anita was meeting her friends from college tonight and as it was raining heavily in Gombak, I decided to be the designated driver. Sure enough, it was pouring heavily.

I ended up spending the time at a cafe while waiting for her to finish. The venue was Wangsa Walk Mall, and to be honest, it was not the most happening of spot.

Best to catch up on the news and lean into my iPad.

U-Cafe Wangsa Walk

Anita and her friends had been harping about it for the last month or so. During one of their get together, the had tea at U-Cafe at Wangsa Walk Mall in Wangsa Maju. It was a revelation to them. And after having a sample of the place yesterday evening, I couldn't agree more.

It was a simple cafe which was built as an annex at the the main entrance to the mall. You couldn't miss it if you enter from the main car park although the sign to the restaurant was rather obscured. Once you were in, you would've to negotiate a flight of stairs onto the main deck, but the place was secluded and cosy.
With a nice jazz music in the background, I studied the menu. It was fusion food, Oriental meets the West. I soon settled into a seafood platter, salad to share with Anita and Nasi Ayam for my main. I couldn't fault any of them, although the portion for my rice was on the small side, even for me.

I had some mint lychee for drinks, and it was a real thirst quencher. The salad was heavenly, fresh and topped with some form of cheese dressing. The seafood platter was Anita's favourite, serving sample of skewered prawns, soft-shell crabs and squids. It was also the most expensive order on the table.

The seafood platterMy sumptuous RM10.90 nasi ayamAll done! For RM10.90, the Chicken Rice was definitely well worth the order. And I could've had a couple of them with the small portion and all. The price was very reasonable.

Highly recommended. I would like to sample other sites in their on my next visit. Make sure you look for signs for U-Cafe the next time you visit Wangsa Walk Mall .....

Wangsa Walk Mall

Wangsa Walk Mall had prospered in the last couple of years from an uncertain beginning. It was opened right after another mall nearby - a Jusco - at Keramat, and initially, it was not very popular.
But, things had picked up since, to the detriment of Jusco. In fact, in the last couple of months, a fair few restaurant at the Jusco complex had closed, in keeping with the dwindling number of shoppers. Even Justin Beiber turned up at Wangsa Walk on his last trip to KL!
Shopping at Wangsa Walk during Ramadhan proved a pain. The car park was full, and the place was packed with stalls spilling onto the corridors. Rather messy if you had to babysit a couple of disinterested children.
The theme for the Raya decorations there was Upin & Ipin. They even made appearances today, but my boys were the least bit amused. The place was too packed for theirs and my liking. And the shopping was not really cheap there either.
Anita and I went there for shopping the other day, and ended up going to another mall because the kids were playing up. But we might return minus the boys, if we could get there early enough on the day, before the car park being filled .....
Wangsa Walk Mall is located in Wangsa Maju, near the exit from DUKE ....

TGV Birthday

A couple of years back, when we were planning one of Idlan's birthday, we made a few enquiries about where to celebrate. We have done the usual - house party, clowns, biggest cakes, restaurants, halls, play gym. We wanted to do something different. We settled for the Bird Park. Amongst other things we came across was to do a party at a cinema, a pool and outdoor garden theme.

The cinema one was unfortunate because there were no big releases during the boys bit days at the time. The place we discussed at was at Pavilion. The package did not come cheap, but it does come with memorabilia, all fitting the theme of the movie. It would have been great to have the Rio theme for instance. The cinema would provide a private sitting area - for those who had been to the Gold Class foyer at GSC at Pavilion, you would know what I was talking about.

Today, we had one such party at TGV Wangsa Walk Mall, to celebrate one of Idlan's classmate's party. The movie was Transformers. The party began at 11, when we picked up our tickets at the foyer, then being ushered into the theaters hall. The friend of hours actually paid for the whole theatre, all filled with friends and families, with the birthday boy and his friends sitting in the middle row. Before the movie begin, we had the usual cake-cutting, sing songs and tidbits. Not much food though, some sausages and popcorns. The movie then begin right before noon.

Speeches before the cakesIt was a great idea actually, although I would have wished for more food. I could see throngs of people buying the tickets outside while we were ushered into the hall. I would personally struggle to fit in that me people though. I would need close to 200 people to fill the hall. the other problem if found was the whole party was done inside the movie theatre. There were not much room to maneuver as we had to walk across the row to get in and out of our seats. We also had problem to stash our food as the seats were pretty cramped.

The cake-cutting was done at the front of the theater, and after that, we had to queue for food on the side. It would have been better if the food were served in a bigger area, maybe the main foyer - unfortunately the main foyer at the cinema was rather too small. There was some delay clearing the food before the movie started, making the children really restless. I would blog more about the movie later.

We were bow packed into the theatre and waiting for the cake-cutting and sing songs. The boys getting grumpy understandably. Movie starting in 20 minutes. Havoc!
